Arriving to ES

Arrival

The International Airport of El Salvador (San Oscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez) is located at Autopista Comalapa, Comalapa, El Salvador. From there, the best way to get to San Salvador (40-50 min) or Santa Tecla (50-60 min) is by Taxi or Uber.

We have contacted two companies that can provide you with a transfer from the airport to your hotel or at any other time during your trip:

Note: You can also ask your hotel to arrange a taxi for you.

Transportation

There are several means of transport in El Salvador, we recommend the following:

1. Taxi or Uber

For short distances, we recommend taking a taxi or Uber. You can book a taxi in advance by calling a taxi company or asking the hotel to do it for you. Uber can be easily called from the app.

2. Hire a driver or rent a car

For longer distances, we recommend hiring a driver. You can also rent a car, but the traffic in El Salvador can be overwhelming for some people. Hiring a driver for the day would not be expensive, especially if you are travelling in a group.

3. Local Buses

You can always take a local bus, but be aware that the bus system is not as high-tech as in other countries. You may have to wait a long time at the bus stop, which can be uncomfortable in hot weather. Some routes may also be overcrowded. We recommend this option in small towns, but not in cities.

Local food

El Salvador has an exquisite and varied food. Our favorites:

1. Pupusas

Pupusas are corn tortillas stuffed with various ingredients. They are cooked on a griddle and served with tomato sauce and pickled cabbage. The most typical pupusas are: revueltas (pork, beans and cheese), frijol con queso (beans and cheese), queso (cheese) and queso con loroco (cheese with “loroco”, a plant with a very unique flavor).

2. Tamales

Tamales are made from a seasoned corn dough filled with various ingredients and wrapped in banana leaf. The most popular are tamales de pollo (chicken tamales), but we also love tamales de elote (corn tamales with sugar and no filling), which are slightly sweet tamales eaten with cheese and cream.

3. Nuégados con chilate

If you ask for nuégados con chilate you will get three types of fritters: egg, yuca (a root) and dough. They are quite simple, but you will have a sweet sauce made of panela (unrefined whole cane sugar) to dip your nuégados in. The dish is not complete without chilate, a hot drink made out of an unique blend of corn, cocoa beans, cinnamon, sugar and water.

4. Horchata

The horchata de morro (jícaro horchata) is made with different seeds such as morro (seeds of the fruit of a morro tree), rice, sesame, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, cocoa, cinnamon and nutmeg. This drink is served cold and you can find it with or without milk, both are delicious!
